Osteopathy is a system of diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of medical conditions. It works with the structure and function of the body and is based on the principle that the well-being of an individual depends on the skeleton, muscles, ligaments and connective tissues functioning smoothly together.
Remedial Massage is the use of techniques to primarily affect the muscular system and can be used to enhance performance in a sport or just to help you feel better by improving flexibility, increasing a joint’s range of motion and reducing injury time via rehabilitation.
We offer various types of massage, from Swedish to sports. So whether you want to feel relaxed and revitalized, or you have a specific need for pain relief, massage is an excellent treatment to help you reach better health.

While some long-term conditions take longer, the average across active X backs is 4-5 treatments for the resolution of initial symptoms.

In essence, the members of all three professions tend to concentrate on helping people with muscular and skeletal problems. The definitions are so similar that it’s difficult to tell them apart. However, if you ask people who have been to see all 3 (I have) a pattern emerges. These are generalisations and will not apply well to a number of individual practitioners: Physiotherapists tend to prescribe more in the way of exercise; many use more electrotherapy than osteos or chiros do; they are less ‘hands on’. - You will be seen by a qualified osteopath, registered with the General Osteopathic Council (GOSC). Our aim is to provide you with an accurate assessment of your problem and as speedy a recovery as possible.
- You are asked to complete a registration form ahead of your appointment, either online or in the clinic. During the appointment your osteopath will ask you some questions about your complaint, medical history, general health and any medication you may be taking.
- To help the osteopath understand and assess your condition, you may be asked to perform simple movements and further assessment may be conducted while you lie on an examination couch. If you have any concerns at any time during the appointment you can ask the osteopath to stop the treatment and explain anything he/she does. The osteopath may also take your blood pressure and test reflexes, joint mobility and muscle strength.
- The osteopath will make a diagnosis, which he/she will discuss with you and in most cases some treatment will be given, but if the osteopath does not believe you will benefit from osteopathic treatment he/she will explain why.
- After treatment, your osteopath will give you further advice regarding the management of your condition. It may take several sessions before your condition is relieved.
Your first massage appointment will involve a massage therapist taking a detailed medical history to ensure that there are no underlying medical conditions that would indicate massage is not suitable. If this is the case, the therapist will refer you to your GP or another suitable health practitioner. If you and the therapist are satisfied with the consultation, the massage will go ahead.
You may feel some discomfort for the first 24 to 48 hours after osteopathy or remedial massage; people will often then feel better. If your discomfort feels excessive please feel free to telephone the clinic and talk to your clinician. Improvement is rarely a ‘straight line’!
Yes, providing your insurance company has agreed to cover treatment. We require a document detailing the cover, policy number and excess. Please note that whether you have health insurance cover or not, you are ultimately liable for the cost of all treatment and services provided by active X backs and its agents.
