Have you heard the saying that it takes 21 days to form a new habit. Well that saying came about because of plastic surgeon Dr. Maxwell Maltz, in a book titled, ‘Psycho-cybernetics‘ – he noticed it took 21 days for people to recover from surgery and accept their new look. He tested this idea out before surgery and found he could raise the confidence of a patient enough that they no longer needed surgery.
What did it take to form this new habit?
A person has to spend 15 minutes doing the same thing for 21 days straight. Miss a day and you have to start again. It has to be at the same time every day and you have to include as many of your senses as you possibly can. So for example if you wanted to take up meditation you use the same spot at the same time, 15 minutes for 21 days and you burn the same incense while you meditate.
As we are focused on exercise for chronic back pain I recommend you put on a t-shirt and jogging pants and wear the same ones for 21 days. You pick a few of the exercises for back pain I have included and spend your 15 minutes doing the same ones, at the same time, in the same room and in the same order.
Why does it work?
Try that for 21 days and see what it does to help your chronic back pain. You might also want to include a massage half way through as a treat for sticking with it.
